"Let's play!" Teachers at the Socrates Center begin every lesson with these words. Children never get tired of playing -- and when a grown-up plays with them, it's twice as interesting. The most important condition for any game is that it be played in English. The teacher accompanies her words with gestures, pantomimes and pictures, so that the students can easily understand what she's talking about Here's one of the children's favorite games at Socrates. The kids listen to simple songs and act out what the characters in the song are doing. In the context of a game, the children easily remember new words and expressions. Specialists call this the "Communicative Approach." This method was developed fifty years ago, and is now widely respected throughout the world. While playing games, the children feel free, which is to say they aren't afraid of doing something wrong. They know that if they make a mistake the teacher will always come to their aid. With the help of the Communicative Approach, the children develop their ability to speak and to understand what they hear. They also gain mastery of grammar during their course of study. At first the children memorize words and phrases, and then they begin to understand the difference between various linguistic forms: singular and plural, past and present tense, etc. By the skill of Socrates' teachers, the children learn to speak properly right away. The teachers follow the program strictly. Every lesson is planned out beforehand. This is what helps us get such good results. Here's a brief overview of the program: First year - The child learns to understand the spoken English language and masters conversational skills. Basic themes include introducing oneself, food, domestic and wild animals, toys, the seasons, weather and health. Second year - This is a transitional stage. The child continues to converse orally, but at the same time begins preparing to read and write. He gets his first acquaintance with letters, sounds, and pictures. Basic themes include the home, the store, clothing, the family, time, and the parts of the body. Third year - On this level the child begins to read and write. Basic themes include the town, school, holidays and travels. Fourth year - Basic language skills are perfected and strengthened.
